More Description
Vancouver and Its Region is a broad-ranging account of oneof the world's most spectacular and liveable metropolitan areas. Itpresents a finely drawn historical geography of the city and itssurroundings, an incisive commentary on the contemporary city, and avaluable report on the impacts of urban growth on the biophysicalenvironment.
A unique collaborative enterprise involving nineteen members of theUBC geography department, whose expertise ranges from physical sciencethrough social science to the humanities and landscape photography, thebook traces the physical, social, economic, historical, andenvironmental development of a relatively small but highly importantarea of British Columbia and Canada.
Vancouver's story has many facets. The city enjoys a magnificentphysical setting shaped over many millennia but sculpted intoapproximately its present form in the last few thousand years byglaciers and volcanoes and more recently profoundly altered byurbanization. It is the home of a complex and vigorous Native society, whose culture was based on the rich local resources well into thenineteenth century but was disrupted and marginalized by the impact ofthe fur trade, the gold rush, the railroad, and the urbanization of itsterritory. During the latter part of this century, it has developedinto a dynamic international metropolis but has also had to deal withthe accompanying social, ethnic, and political tensions.
Opening with a vivid photo essay, which presents several originalviews of the metropolitan area, Vancouver and Its Region isrichly illustrated with many original maps, diagrams, and photographs, which are filled with local detail yet point out issues and processesthat are relevant far beyond Vancouver. The result of decades ofresearch, this readable, provocative, and informative book will appealto the local community and to students and academics interested in themany disciplines it represents.
