More DescriptionSheridan's The School for Scandal is widely regarded as the most outstanding Restoration comedy ever produced. Indeed, the pages are so crammed with larger-than-life characters, an intricate plot and witty conversation that the popularity of the play has remained undiminished over the past two centuries. The School for Scandal has several cleverly interwoven plots. Here, we find Lady Sneerwell plotting to shatter the reputation of fellow women in London's high society whilst also trying to wreck a love affair for her own financial advantage. Meanwhile, Sir Oliver arrives from a lengthy stay overseas and is concerned about how to dispose of his fortune. Not knowing his two nephews very well, he disguises himself as a moneylender to test their worthiness to inherit his estate. The result is a work of comic genius that also succeeds in satirizing the culture of gossip, hypocrisy and self-serving malice in London's fashionable society of the late 1770s.Although suitable for all readers, this larger print edition is particularly well-suited to school and university students and their teachers. Here, the larger font size will make reading a more comfortable experience whilst also providing plenty of extra room in the wider margins for making personal notes.
