More DescriptionThis book tells the enchanting story of three sheepdog puppies that unexpectedly arrive on Ma and Pa Meakin's farm one cold November day. It is aimed at a readership ranging from six years of age upwards and would also be particularly suitable as a bedtime story. The early chapters', providing period and backcloth, set out amusing and often touching accounts of how the puppies were first discovered in the old barn; their interactions with both the resident farm animals and the farmer's family leading up to the third chapter in which the puppies discover their very special secret. Each of the ensuing seven chapters recounts an adventure. Chapter 4 hints at the mystical as Ma and Pa begin to question what they saw when a badly injured goose inexplicably recovers from a critical accident. This premise continues in the next chapter in a heart warming tale when the puppies come to the aid of a dying tree and begin wondering whether a number of fortunate events were in some way connected to the tree having magical powers. In Chapter 6 the puppies have to combat a supposed traveller's curse leading them to learn one of life's lessons. The next story, Chapter 7, focuses on efforts to help a recently widowed retired school teacher, and how with a puppy's assistance, a disgruntled teenage visitor comes to terms with his parents divorce. In Chapter 8, Ma's eccentric uncles take centre stage in probably the puppies' most bizarre adventure which sees them requisitioned to trace a missing message balloon. Chapter 9 introduces the puppies to their first day of heavy snow which also entails the rescue of a snowy owl's babies. The final chapter returns to a mystical theme with Pa Meakin sitting down on Christmas day to recount an ancient story of an orphan boy who fashions a giant guardian sheepdog out of snow that leads to a most extraordinary and magical real life conclusion.
