As a forensic nurse she was very interested in domestic partner abuse cases and asked her readers to please share their stories. Shame and silence being the hallmark of domestic abuse cases, no one responded. Then finally, a woman named Donna wrote to her, pleading, "Please tell my story." Pat recognized Donna's name and when Donna finally realized it was Pat who was her husband's hospice nurse, she knew it was ordained that they tell her story.
