More DescriptionThis is the second edition of Kimmel's very successful textbook for the Sociology of Gender course. Kimmel asserts that men and women are much more alike than they are different. It is gender inequality that produces the differences we observe and that also produces the cultural impulse to search for such differences even when there is little or no basis for them. Indeed, gender is created through a series of relationships produced in our social interactions with one another and within gendered institutions, whose formal organizational dynamics reproduce gender inequality and produce gender differences. Kimmel's design does not look so much for similarity, but equality for those traits heretofore labeled masculine and feminine - competence and compassion, ambition and affection, accessible to both women and men mature enough to claim them.
