Gerald Heller was born on October 6, 1940. He served in the Army and received a business degree from the University of Southern California. He started his music career in the 1960s as an agent and promoter. In 1987, he and Eric Wright, the rapper known as Eazy-E, founded Ruthless Records. A year later, the label released Straight Outta Compton, the debut album by the rap group N.W.A. With this and other albums, Heller promoted gangsta rap to a mainstream audience. In 2006, he wrote an autobiography entitled Ruthless with Gil Reavill. He died of a heart attack on September 2, 2016 at the age of 75.
