The model of Gestalt family therapy that I present here is an optimistic model as it relates to a family's growth and its potential. It is optimistic because we believe that the pattern, structure or balance that a family has developed can truly and permanently change. Further, we believe that teaching family members awareness and contact skills so that they can connect better will allow them to continue to form new ways of relating. The idea is not just that families can change. It is that families can continue to change. Family members can learn the skills necessary to disrupt their old balance and to reformulate the family in a way that better meets their needs.
