Author Biography
Osteen, Louis (Author)
William Louis Osteen was born in Anderson, South Carolina on September 17, 1941. His first job was working the concessions at one of his father's drive-in movie theaters. He managed theaters in Atlanta in the 1960s, but in the 1970s, he went to work in the kitchen of a French restaurant in Atlanta. He educated himself in the traditions of Southern cooking and went on to open several South Carolina restaurants, which helped elevate Southern cuisine to a new respectability. His cookbook, Louis Osteen's Charleston Cooking: Recipes from a Lowcountry Chef, was published in 1999. In 2004, he was named best chef in the Southeast by the James Beard Foundation. He died from liver cancer on May 19, 2019 at the age of 77.
