More DescriptionThe international artist and the most eminent chronicler of our time: 60 images by Gerhard Richter in dialogue with new texts by Alexander Kluge.
In the golden autumn of 2012 the national newspaper Die Welt stood still for a day, and as a symbol of its standstill a sleepy dog lay where the headlines normally loomed. What happened? Gerhard Richter, one of the most globally significant artists, had taken over and printed all 30 pages of the October 5, 2012 issue of Die Welt with his personal stamp: images from quiet moments in unquiet times, abolition of the primacy of politics, the private in place of the world-historical, but above all: artful contrasts between sharpness and softness.Alexander Kluge applauded the public performance of this unusual art action. Spontaneously, he added stories to the images. Gerhard Richter answered Kluge equally spontaneously with the proposal of a joint book. Richter delivered more images and Kluge more stories. Thus came about the second joint project--after the bestseller Dezember--by the two artists: a book of contemporaneous, lived stories, as sharp as they are soft.
