Henning Buhmann traces the development of Protestant missionary thinking in Germany between 1916 and 1934, concentrating on the activities of the Central Committee of the Home Mission (Central-Ausschusses der Inneren Mission). Ein missionarischer Aufbruch sollte die Antwort fur die als Bedrohung wahrgenommene Gegenwart von Revolution und Entkirchlichung bieten. Henning Buhmann untersucht den Diskurs und die Umsetzung dieses Konzeptes von 1916 bis 1934. Bei der Analyse volksmissionarischer Programme wird deutlich, wie die Protagonisten versuchten auf die politische Situation zu reagieren, vor allem durch Annaherung an die nationalistische Ideologie. In einem zweiten Schritt zeichnet der Autor am Beispiel der Evangelistischen Abteilung des Central-Ausschusses der Inneren Mission die institutionelle Entwicklung der Volksmissionsbewegung nach, die zunachst verheiaungsvoll begann, aber durch zahlreiche interne Konflikte paralysiert wurde, bis sie zuletzt an der Frage nach dem Verhaltnis zum nationalsozialistischen Regime zerbrach. Schliealich wird anhand von internen Berichten von Volksmissionaren uber Volksmissionswochen in den Gemeinden deutlich, wie stark sich die nur in kleinem Maastab mogliche Umsetzung von den umfassenden Hoffnungen und Visionen unterschied. Die Studie kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass die Volksmissionsbewegung nicht nur an den auaeren Rahmenbedingungen, sondern vor allem an inneren Widerspruchen scheiterte.
