More DescriptionCHAINS is a work of historical fiction. Although some of the characters are individuals who actually lived at the time, they are portrayed in totally fictional action. All other characters are drawn from my imagination. The American Civil War was anything but civil. During the few years prior, during, and after this terrible conflict, which will forever remain an indelible stain on our nation’s history, people of all ages, regardless of race, were enormously affected. Whether they lived north or south, were young or old, rich or poor, all suffered in one way or another.Their lives are all intertwined, and as war approaches, each is forced to deal with individual and collective conflicts. Agnes becomes Lu Lu’s teacher and friend. Lu Lu is raped by Edward Dunwood, the son of the plantation owner and his bigoted wife, and eventually is forced to run away along with the giant slave, Samson, David’s half brother, via the ‘underground railroad’. David, who is partly crippled, must accompany the spoiled, arrogant Edward to war, as his personal manservant. The novel relates the struggles of all these primary characters, along with several others, through the war to their resolutions, all while the country is being torn apart.
