In the first set of articles collected here, Professor Poulle is concerned with a number of the astronomical tables of the Western Middle Ages. More DescriptionIn the first set of articles collected here, Professor Poulle is concerned with a number of the astronomical tables of the Western Middle Ages. These he would categorise as those produced before the Alfonsine tables - which, he would argue, have in fact nothing to do with Alfonso X of Castile; they lead on to a consideration of the importance of astronomy in medieval cultural life. One instance of this is the appearance, towards the end of the Middle Ages of a new appreciation of time, manifested clearly in a concern for dating, for instance dates of birth. Astrology is also dealt with in several studies. The final section presents a group of five studies on the history of astronomy in the period from the 10th to the 16th century.
