The young soldier is left for dead when the senator's family is butchered. He is saved by Losrein, a shiner, which is a species of vampire that walks the earth in daylight and drinks only the blood of animals. Losrein turns Adrias into a shiner and they travel together, experiencing first-hand the wars and changes of the ancient world. Mid-18th century, they leave Portas, a haven for shiners. There, they meet Isabelle, the beautiful and exciting former baroness who captures Adrias' heart. The men move into her mansion near Paris. Years later, hearing that the Vatican has declared war against vampires and shiners.
